Hi guys and gals, hope everybody had a good Christmas and Newyear Celebrations.

Was just thinking about looking into buying a car fault code reader, might be handy as I'm always messing around with cars.
Not always Opel:bash:
Was looking on the net and there seems a load of different types.
Does anybody know anything about these??

Cheers
Micheal

I think most fault codes can be read from the C20Xe and the LET with a trusty paperclip,

I have done it a few times with my calibras, the connector was in the bonnet on the passenger wing i think.

I just bought a U380 code reader from Ebay. It's pretty basic but works fine. All you can do is read and clear codes and also reset the engine management light but that's all I will ever need it for really.

how much do these roughly cost? What you have would be as much as i would need for tinkering.

I have an elm327 reader bought from ebay, about 40stg iirc, Uses scantool
software which it came with or you can download from scantool.net. Reads
codes and translates most of them from eng management, resets eng management light and allows live scanning of eng management data. needs
an rs232 port on your pc or a usb-rs232 adapter and software if ur pc does
not have rs 232. in theory all petrol cars from 01 use obd2 protocol but some from befoe then also did.
I did a good bit of reading up about these and the elm327 type seemed to be
rated highly.
I also have carsoft software and dedicated readers and leads for mercs and beemers also bought from ebay which do dealer level diagnostics on these including eng management, abs, traction, gearboxes, clocks ,airbags etc. Well
worth the money ,beemer about 50stg uk seller, merc about 110 e from german seller and software a tenner from uk ,have stayed clear of hongkong and china sellers who are much cheaper.

Hope this is some help,

Dave
